Boan1942 presents its 2025 fall exhibition 《The Skin I Live on》,
on view through October 3 at Artspace Boan 1, 2, and 3.
Through this exhibition, Boan1942 seeks to examine the
interactions between contemporary society and “soil,” the very surface of the
Earth we inhabit, and to create a space for reflecting on its layered meanings.
Approaching soil as the “skin” of the planet—where strata of life and time
accumulate—the exhibition explores how we have responded, through various
senses and attitudes, to this ground we stand upon.

We are highly sensitive to even the slightest changes in our own
skin, carefully tending to it, yet we remain indifferent—or worse, inflict
harm—on the skin of the Earth upon which we live. 《The Skin I Live on》
seeks to explore, from multiple perspectives, how this neglected or damaged
planetary skin inevitably returns its impact upon humanity.
The four participating artists (and teams) respond to the
diverse social and political layers surrounding soil through media such as
video, installation, and photography, each unfolding their own reflections.
Unmake Lab documents sites of “ordinary nature” distorted by development and
exploitation, reflecting on the relationship between humans and the natural
world. ikkibawiKrrr evokes repressed memories of war and forgotten victims
through monuments made of soil and minerals, re-examining political oppression
and social memory.

Shin Mi Jung reflects on the memory of Bamseom—once erased and
later regenerated—to reveal the cycles of life within urban development. Eunbi
Kwon examines soil and labor, exploring the repetitive cycles of women’s bodies
and lives while addressing stories of exploitation and care within broader
social and political contexts.
Together, these works treat soil as both a political and sensory
medium entangled with memory and power, inviting us to reconsider it as a vital
point of connection between humans and the world.
