Alternative
Space LOOP presents a solo exhibition 《The Chronicle of
Boost Barracks》 by artist Yunjoo Kwak, on view through
March 31.
This
exhibition revolves around the narrative surrounding the historical trajectory
of the Boost Barracks designed throughout the Netherlands by Dutch military
officer and architect Captain Auguste Boost (1900-1985).
During
WWII, this military barracks was hastily constructed throughout the Netherlands
to counter Nazi Germany's expansion. It subsequently served various purposes,
including a staging base for deployments to the Korean War and the Indonesian
War of Independence, and today functions as asylum seekers' centres.
Based on
a decade of tracking the trajectory of the barracks through documentation,
archival and field research, the artist reconstructs the people, spaces, and
scenes encountered along the way through essay films, interviews, architectural
model maquettes and archival collections.
Her
artistic practice seeks to recover suppressed memories and silenced voices
within the epistemological gaps of decolonial discourse, shaped by ongoing
colonial power structures and cultural imperialism.
