A-Lounge Contemporary presents a solo exhibition 《Slow Bump》 by artist Cho Hyori, on view through December 20. This exhibition is composed of works that reveal the artist’s intention to find and attune to her own pace within the world.

As suggested by the title ‘Slow Bump,’ the exhibition metaphorically reflects the artist’s attempt to slowly hold onto fleeting moments and emotions encountered while moving between Vancouver, LA, and Seoul. Elements such as paving blocks, fences, signs, and sleeping cats enter the field of view, pausing our steps and attention.

In the first-floor gallery, visitors are greeted by a fence-like structure with a slightly open door. The audience can view the work only through the gap in the door, and if they approach for a closer look, they encounter a piece inscribed with the phrase “KEEP GATE CLOSED.”

The sign, which typically signifies restricted access, is paradoxically transformed into a symbolic image that halts the viewers’ movement in front of the open door.

In this exhibition, the artist gently pushes open doors marked with directives like “KEEP GATE CLOSED,” revealing scenes that resist the world’s demands rather than simply obey them.

《Slow Bump》 reflects Cho‘s desire to recalibrate her own pace within a world that constantly accelerates. Through moments of slowing down, her works trace a search for renewed sensibility and direction.
