The Busan Museum of Art is hosting the
international exchange event 《Moving on Asia》 through June 29 at Domoheon and the Busan Cinema Center, with the
goal of exploring trends in video art across the Asia-Pacific region.
As a partner program of "Loop Lab
Busan", 《Moving on Asia》
was conceived to reexamine the currents of contemporary Asian art and to
encourage the exchange of aesthetic and social imagination across national,
generational, and regional boundaries. Under the theme "Asia in Motion
through Images," the event features a variety of programs, including a
forum, screenings, and an exhibition.
The forum, held on April 24, was
organized around three key topics. The first session, “Collective Memory and
Communal Narratives,” reflected on how indigenous mythologies and shared
histories are being reinterpreted and reconstructed in contemporary visual
culture. The second session, “Fluidity and Variability,” examined how
technological developments are blurring the boundaries of time and space,
highlighting the inherent fluidity of video art and how it mirrors the dynamic
perceptions of our present age.
The third session, “Performativity of
Place, Politics of the Body,” explored how the act of viewing video works takes
on different meanings depending on the location, and how it influences physical
responses and sensory perception.

The screening held on April 25
featured single-channel works by leading contemporary video artists from across
Asia, including Yang Fudong, Yuan Goang-Ming, and Meiro Koizumi. Focusing on
themes such as the deconstruction of narrative, memory, and community, the
program offered a glimpse into non-linear senses of time and the distinct
aesthetics of digital media. Following the screening, an artist talk was held,
providing an opportunity to better understand the participating artists'
practices.
The screening program will continue from
May 7 to 14 at the Busan Cinema Center Cinematheque & BIFF Theatre.
Lastly, an exhibition will run
through June 29 at Domoheon, featuring 20 works by 18 artists from 13 Asian
countries, including Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Notable
participating artists include Woojin Jang and Yusuke Sasaki, who represent the
digital media art scenes of their respective countries. The exhibition offers
viewers a comparative look at the diverse forms of contemporary media art
across Asia.
Jinsuk Suh, Director of the Busan Museum of
Art, stated, “《Moving on Asia》
offers a platform to explore how technology-based art communicates with society
and how it can assert its own independent voice.” He added, “We hope this event
will serve as a cornerstone for expanding and fostering exchange within the
Asian media art ecosystem.”
