PS
CENTER presents 《My Own Rules》,
featuring works by Sukho Kang, Dahoon Nam, and Changbeom Heo, on view through
June 6.
Beneath
the calm and ordinary lives we appear to enjoy, intricate networks of countless
rules operate with precision. Within this order, we are protected from the fear
of disorder, yet at the same time we gradually lose the unique lenses through
which we perceive the world.
When
externally imposed systems reduce us to components within a larger mechanism,
what fills the resulting void is helplessness. The feeling that nothing can be
changed soon expands into the sense that one’s own existence holds no value,
and that feeling of worthlessness in turn deepens the helplessness even
further.

The
exhibition 《My Own Rules》
brings together the practices of three artists who refuse to stop in the face
of this cycle. Rather than denying or concealing feelings of worthlessness,
they confront them directly, imposing upon themselves small yet steadfast rules
of their own.

The rules are not grand. Writing, trying to understand, waiting.
Yet when one moves within rules one has chosen for oneself, it becomes possible
to reclaim the unique lens that externally imposed systems have taken away.
To create one’s own rules is not simply to establish guidelines
for behavior. It is the smallest force that keeps a person moving even in the
face of worthlessness — a way of living through meanings drawn from within
oneself rather than meanings assigned by the world.
