Alternative Space LOOP presents a group
exhibition of young painters titled “Painting in winter”, curated by curator Ji
Yoon Yang and painter Donwook Suh, until January 25.
“Painting in Winter” is an exhibition that
brings together works by seven painters born between 1993 and 2000. Rather than
highlighting a single approach to painting, the exhibition shows how diverse
subjects and methods can still feel fresh.
Cubism,
Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and other diverse painting styles of the 20th
century did not exist in isolation or vanish entirely. Instead, participating
painters reconfigured these existing approaches to propose their own unique
emphases. In today's era, with the deepening impact of digital technologies,
particularly AI-generated imagery, questions surrounding new forms of painting
have become more timely and relevant.
This
exhibition explores the essence and future of painting through the concept of
"transitive painting" introduced by David Joselit. This concept views
painting not merely as an object but as a dynamic entity that generates meaning
and relationships through various processes.
“Painting
in Winter” raises questions about how contemporary painting, no longer fixed as
a mere possession, can create new meanings within its relationships with
audiences and the market. It delves into the new possibilities of painting in
the digital and AI age, seeking to integrate the networked nature of today's
painting into artistic practices.
