Faction presents a solo exhibition 《Renlighet Är En Dygd》 by artist duo Nana & Felix, on view through November 21.

The exhibition consists of an audiovisual piece, a found object, insect electrocutor traps, embroidery and an artist book. In conjunction with the exhibition panel talk will be held to introduce the related critique and artist book.

Formed in 2013, Nana & Felix have explored man-made cultural landscapes, looking for ways to give visual form to the idea/ideology of Progress. Since 2024 they have been developing a new, long-term project under the umbrella title “Architecture of Safety.”

The project is based on the premise that our contemporary world is to a large extent organized around Safety and Security. Through a series of multimedial installations the artists explore how our seemingly blind trust in technological progress and unquestioned strive for absolute safety are changing our perceptions of, and actions toward, nature and the human environment.

Inspired by the Swedish phrase “Renlighet Är En Dygd,” derived from 19th-century Nordic Enlightenment maxims, the exhibition presents an “uncanny multimedia installation space” that raises concerns about urban systems in which surveillance and control are accepted in the name of security.

The blue light and the resonance enveloping the gallery evoke a city that has made an intense control routine in the name of hygiene and security, and sound an alarm about the surveillance and violence inherent in that system. For whom is the absolute “architecture of safety,” which transcends even humanity to guarantee perfect peace?
