The Chungnam Artist Residency, which fosters and supports emerging artists to grow into representative artists in Chungcheongnam-do province and beyond, has opened its doors and begun operations.
The Chungnam Artist Residency for professional artistic creation activities was built by Hyundai City Corporation Co., Ltd. under a business agreement signed between the province and Hyundai City Corporation Co., Ltd. in 2022, and all facilities will be operated free of charge by the province for 20 years.
The province aims to nurture and support talented and creative artists while addressing the creative needs of artists due to the lack of facilities in the metropolitan area and other regions.
The Chungnam Artist Residency is equipped with nine professional studios (70.4㎡ each), a community building (92.71㎡), an exhibition building (213㎡), and parking facilities, and is operated as a participatory art institution by sharing art education services and experience studios in addition to resident artists’ creative activities.
It operates a specialized creative support program for visual artists, including funding, exhibition organizing, expert matching, and domestic and international residency exchanges.
The province aims to help emerging artists with their creative activities through specialized programs, strengthen their artistic foundation to help them settle in the local, and build an international foundation by joining the Alliance of Artists Communities.
In the previous artist-in-residence selection competition, 10 talented contemporary artists were selected from 60 applicants through a portfolio review and interview process. The artists were selected from a wide range of genres, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, three-dimensional installation, and media video, and the first batch of artists is characterized by their multidisciplinary works that do not embrace only one genre, which is characteristic of contemporary art.
To celebrate the opening, a showcase exhibition of 30 works will be presented as a preview of the artists’ creative activities. The theme of the exhibition is “Elsewhere Exhibition”, which reflects the discovery of new environments and places and the coexistence of time, and will showcase various interpretations of place, a core theme of contemporary art, to draw attention to Chungcheongnam-do province, a new place in the domestic and international art world.
