Amado Art Space presents a solo exhibition 《V370A: Beyond Deep Time》 by artist WonJung Choi, on view through September 3.
This exhibition marks WonJung Choi’s eighth
solo exhibition and her first in Korea in eight years. Over the past two
decades, Choi has evolved her sense of identity through her experiences of
migration to the United States and her interactions with the world across time
and space.
In this exhibition, the artist imagines
beyond “Deep Time” and encounters early humans who survived the harsh Ice Age.
After migrating from Africa to East Asia, these early humans successfully
adapted to and settled in extreme environments by developing the V370A genetic
mutation.

Based
on these scientific facts, Choi continues to imagine new narratives while
adopting an increasingly incisive archaeological and cultural anthropological
perspective on human migration, adaptation, and evolution.
Building
on a sculptural methodology developed through years of research into materials
and techniques, the artist layers and combines historical artifacts and
evidence—such as sculptures left by early humans, shovel-shaped teeth that bear
traces of survival and adaptation, and old maps reflecting migration routes
during the Ice Age and cultural identities—as though accumulating strata of
time.
Through
these sculptural explorations, Choi connects the past beyond Deep Time with the
present, revealing identity not as something fixed but as a process of
continual formation. Furthermore, at a time when we are once again confronting
extreme climate change, she invites us to imagine together how we might survive
and move toward the future.
