On April 22, the National Museum of Modern
and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA; Director Kim Sunghee) signed a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA;
Director Christopher Bedford) to strengthen collaboration across exhibitions,
collections, research, and educational programs.
This agreement has been initiated to expand
the foundation for international collaboration by sharing diverse currents of
contemporary art, drawing on the collections and expertise of both
institutions. In particular, mutual exchanges based on the key holdings of the
MMCA and the SFMOMA are expected to further enrich their respective programs.
Under the agreement, the two institutions will
collaborate across a wide range of areas, including the co-organization and
presentation of exhibitions, exchanges of collections and archives, joint
research and publications, as well as the development of educational programs
and academic events.

“Art can serve as a powerful connector, and
this partnership embodies the MMCA and SFMOMA’s shared goal of bridge-building
across cultures, creativity, and continents,” said Christopher Bedford,
Director of SFMOMA. “We look forward to fostering meaningful dialogue between
Korea and the U.S. and beyond on this very special 50th anniversary of the
Sister City relationship between Seoul and San Francisco.”
“This MOU is a crucial step as two
institutions that have developed in differing regions and contexts become
closely linked through the medium of contemporary art,” said MMCA Director Kim
Sunghee. “Through various collaborative projects that connect Korean and global
contemporary art, we look forward to witnessing both institutions growing
together while offering a wider perspective to their visitors.”
