The 17th Gwangju International Art Fair (Art Gwangju 2026) will take place from October 22 to 25 at the Kimdaejung Convention Center in Gwangju, South Korea. Under the theme “Connecting Gwangju and Jeonnam Through Art, Opening Art Gwangju to Asia,” this year's edition aims to strengthen the regional art ecosystem and expand exchanges with the broader Asian art market.

Art Gwangju 2026 is expected to bring together 94 galleries from 12 countries, comprising 82 Korean galleries and 12 international galleries representing 11 countries. Of the 94 participating galleries, 49 are based in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province (Jeollanam-do), accounting for approximately 52 percent of the total. This composition reflects the fair's dual role as a platform for regional galleries and a venue for fostering connections between local and international art markets.

Since the establishment of the Gwangju Biennale in 1995, Gwangju has developed into an internationally recognized center for contemporary art. Building on this cultural foundation, Art Gwangju serves a distinct role within the city's art ecosystem as a commercial platform connecting galleries, artists, and collectors.

Presenting Major Galleries and Contemporary Artists from Korea and Abroad

This year's fair will feature galleries from Korea and overseas, including Tang Contemporary Art, Keumsan Gallery, UM Gallery, and Art Space House.

Tang Contemporary Art is expected to present works by internationally active Chinese contemporary artists, including Ai Weiwei, Yue Minjun, and Zhao Zhao.

Numerous regional galleries will also participate, presenting works by artists based in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do. With more than half of the participating galleries coming from the region, Art Gwangju 2026 offers an opportunity to explore the diversity of artistic practices and creative activities within the local art scene.

From Internationally Renowned Artists to Emerging Regional Talent

Art Gwangju 2026 will present a series of special exhibitions designed to broaden visitors' engagement with contemporary art.

《Heroes of Contemporary Art》 will feature works by internationally renowned artists, including Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, David Hockney, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. By bringing together works by widely recognized figures, the exhibition introduces visitors to diverse forms of contemporary artistic expression while encouraging greater interest in art collecting.

《Propose》, a special exhibition featuring works from the collections of regional collectors, will explore the cultural significance of private art collections. It offers an opportunity to consider how individual tastes, aesthetic judgments, and collecting practices shape the development of a collection.

《Rising Star》 will introduce works by four emerging artists from Gwangju and Jeollanam-do: Kim Myung-jin, Kim Ha-seul, Yoo Soo-yeon, and Jeon Jeong-yeon. The program is particularly noteworthy for providing emerging regional artists with opportunities to present their work and connect with galleries and collectors.

Meanwhile, 《Spectrum》 will explore diverse approaches to media art through themes of light, movement, and the passage of time. Guided tours and participatory programs will also be available to visitors.

The Gwangju Biennale and Its Relationship with the Regional Art Market

Gwangju has long been a center of international contemporary art exchange and exhibition activity, particularly through the Gwangju Biennale. This cultural environment has helped establish a foundation for artists, art institutions, and galleries in the region to pursue a wide range of artistic activities.

However, biennales and art fairs serve different, though potentially complementary, functions within the art ecosystem. While biennales generally emphasize artistic experimentation, curatorial perspectives, and critical discourse, art fairs primarily connect galleries with collectors and facilitate the circulation and sale of artworks.

Rather than evaluating these two types of platforms according to identical criteria, it is more productive to consider their respective roles and the ways in which they may complement one another.

From this perspective, Art Gwangju's engagement with regional galleries, its presentation of emerging artists, and its exchanges with international galleries are particularly significant. These initiatives offer an opportunity to examine how an art fair can contribute to expanding artistic activity within a city that already possesses substantial cultural resources.

New Possibilities for the Regional Art Market

At a time when major art transactions and international art fairs in South Korea remain concentrated in Seoul, regional art fairs are seeking to define their roles according to the distinct cultural characteristics and market conditions of their respective cities.

Art Gwangju is pursuing a similar direction by supporting regional galleries while expanding opportunities for exchange with art professionals from Korea and abroad. The substantial proportion of participating galleries from Gwangju and Jeollanam-do is particularly notable, reflecting the fair's commitment to maintaining close ties with the regional art ecosystem.

An important question going forward is how this participation can translate into the development of new collector communities, broader opportunities for regional artists, and sustained exchanges among galleries.

Art Gwangju 2026 offers an opportunity to consider the relationship between Gwangju's established international cultural infrastructure and the activities of its regional art market. Whether this year's edition can create meaningful opportunities for local artists and galleries while contributing to the continued development of Gwangju's art market will be an important point to watch.
