The Seoul National University Museum of Art is presenting the archive special exhibition 《Inside/Outside》 in celebration of its 20th anniversary, on view through June 28.

The exhibition examines the museum’s “inside” and “outside” from two perspectives, bringing into view both the spatial and institutional practices it has developed over the past two decades, as well as the broader trajectories of art history.

First, archival materials related to the construction of the Seoul National University Museum of Art are being presented to the public for the first time. From the internal planning process within Seoul National University to the design concept by the renowned architect Rem Koolhaas, the exhibition traces the formation of the museum through internal documents, architectural drawings, photographs, and media materials.

In particular, it highlights how the museum’s design evolved during the process of relocating its construction site while maintaining its initial concept of “connection” between the university and the surrounding community, as evidenced through fax documents, concept drawings, and contemporary press materials.

Another component of the exhibition centers on the collection that the Seoul National University Museum of Art has built over the past 20 years. Since its opening in 2006, the museum has continuously expanded its holdings and now houses a total of 1,034 works.

This exhibition presents approximately 120 pieces, including artist donations, gifts from collectors such as the Lee Kun-hee Collection and the Shin Ok-Jin Collection, as well as acquisitions by the museum and works transferred from the university in its early years.

Through works spanning a range of media, the exhibition traces the expansion of aesthetic forms and social discourse, while also revealing the trajectory of the museum’s exhibitions and activities over the past two decades.
