Museum SAN presents a solo exhibition 《En attendant》,
by artist Lee Bae, on view through December 6.
This exhibition marks the first solo show by a Korean
artist since Museum SAN opened. Grounded in the museum’s core philosophy—the
harmony of nature, art, and space—the artist’s sculptural language, both
distinctly Korean and universally resonant, invites visitors into a wide range
of experiences and expanded reflection.

The title 《En attendant》 is about more than simply
waiting. It speaks to moving forward while holding on to hope, even when things
remain unfinished. Like the long process of charcoal becoming charcoal, the
title also reflects the year of preparation that went into bringing this
exhibition to life.
Since moving to France in 1989, Lee Bae has devoted his
practice to charcoal as a medium, consistently exploring the principles of
creation and disappearance—and the cycles inherent in matter. Centered on more
than three decades of work, this exhibition offers an in-depth look at the
relational network in which nature and humanity, time and existence intersect
through the material of charcoal.

《En attendant》 is presenting the full scope
of the artist’s practice—from painting and sculpture to installation and
video—at an unprecedented scale and depth. It goes beyond simply viewing
individual works: as visitors move through the museum and walk among the
artworks, art and nature come together to form a single, complete experience.
From
the entrance of the main building to the outdoor spaces, visitors embark on a
journey through diverse landscapes shaped by the deep black presence of
charcoal. Throughout the exhibition, they are invited to remove their shoes and
walk through the spaces, or sit and quietly immerse themselves in the rhythm
and flow of the works.
