Xlarge Gallery presents a solo exhibition by photographer San
Choi, 《최산김수연최온》, on view
through March 7.
This exhibition was conceived as an observation of the home, the
family, and the life cycle of images that surround them. It also examines the
ethical distance and limitations that arise when a private family image archive
is disclosed within another private space—the “home” of Xlarge Gallery—while
reflecting on the contexts in which photographs exist within domestic
environments.

As the title suggests, the photographs feature San Choi, his
wife Suyeon Kim, and their daughter On Choi. The approximately 450 photographs,
taken between early December 2024 and January 2026, fall within the traditional
category of “family photography.” During this period, Choi learned of his
wife’s pregnancy and, as he encountered her changing body and the imminent
birth of their daughter, decided to begin documenting their intimate daily life
through the camera.
Grouped under the series ‘On Growing,’ the photographs move
between the comfort of the home and the outside world. They are the result of
recording the birth and growth of a new family through a snapshot format, and
mark the starting point of a long-term project that will continue to follow a
child’s life as it unfolds. At the same time, these images invite viewers to
reconsider the notions of home and family, presenting scenes that are both
familiar and strangely unfamiliar.
The exhibition is open to visitors by advance reservation via
the XL Gallery website.
