A solo exhibition
by Koo Jeong A,《KANGSE X》, is currently on view
at Hauser & Wirth in Zurich, Switzerland. The exhibition offers a focused
presentation of the artist’s recent work, developed through sculpture,
painting, and installation, and reflects her sustained investigation into
gravity, balance, sensation, and perception. The works position space not as a
passive backdrop but as a field in which sensory and physical forces interact,
reconfiguring the viewer’s mode of perception.

The Meaning of《KANGSE X》
“KANGSE” is a
concept repeatedly employed in Koo Jeong A’s practice, referring to a condition
of space that extends beyond physical location. It denotes a state in which
gravity, balance, energy, and sensation intersect and operate simultaneously.
The addition of “X” introduces an indeterminate variable—one that does not
point toward a fixed conclusion but instead functions as an open value, a
sensory coordinate that shifts according to the viewer’s experience.《KANGSE X》does not present a closed concept;
rather, it names the conditions through which spatial forces continue to
transform and remain active.

Key Works and
Exhibition Structure
At the center of
the exhibition is the ‘KANGSE’ sculpture series. The organic forms,
reminiscent of a fetal body, make contact with the floor at a single point,
maintaining balance under conditions of extreme instability. These sculptures
do not emphasize stable composition or monumentality; instead, they articulate
a state of continual negotiation with gravity. Sculpture is presented not as a
fixed object but as an event through which the forces of space become visible.
DENSITY
X (2025) realizes a suspended sculptural
state through the use of magnetic forces and physical mechanisms. In this work,
density is treated not as a fixed material property but as a variable dependent
on surrounding conditions. The piece invites a reconsideration of the
conventional assumption that sculpture must rest on the ground, experimentally
examining the relationship between matter and space.

The ‘Seven
Stars’ Series
The exhibition
also includes the ‘Seven Stars’ series of phosphorescent paintings.
These works are composed to reveal different visual states depending on
lighting conditions and respond to shifts between light and darkness within the
exhibition space. Rather than functioning as fixed images, the paintings
operate as visual experiences activated over time and through environmental
conditions. In doing so, the exhibition emphasizes that vision is not confined
to the artwork itself but is formed through space, lighting, and the conditions
of viewing. The ‘Seven Stars’ series extends the exhibition’s engagement
with space, sensation, and invisible forces into the realm of painting, forming
an additional sensory layer alongside the sculptural works.

Significance
and Evaluation
Koo Jeong A
previously expanded the parameters of exhibition-making at the Korean Pavilion
of the Venice Biennale by combining visual experience with olfactory elements
and spatial memory.《KANGSE X》continues
this line of inquiry, while shifting its emphasis from the expansion of sensory
effects toward the structural conditions through which sensation operates.
Accordingly,《KANGSE X》does not aim to comprehensively
summarize the artist’s practice but instead concentrates her current concerns
and experiments. The works do not offer explicit narratives or messages;
rather, they reveal how perception and sensation emerge within conditions of
instability and indeterminacy. By presenting space as an actively operating
force, the exhibition frames aesthetic experience not as a completed result but
as a process in continual formation.

Artist
Koo Jeong A is a
Korean contemporary artist whose practice spans sculpture, painting,
installation, drawing, scent, and light. Her work focuses on translating
physical conditions such as gravity, balance, and invisible energy into
sculptural and visual language, while consistently questioning how sensory
experience is constructed through environmental and contextual conditions. She
has participated in major international exhibitions and biennales and is
recognized for expanding contemporary understandings of sculpture and spatial
perception.
