The Busan Biennale Organizing Committee presents the Sea Art
Festival 2025, 《Undercurrents: Waves Walking on the Water》,
through November 2, at Dadaepo Beach, Gouni Ecological Trail, Morundae
Observatory Deck Trail, the former Dadae Incineration Plant, and the former
Molwoon Coffeeshop.
Led by co-artistic directors Keumhwa Kim and Bernard Vienat, the
Festival begins with the unique geography of Dadaepo Beach, where the Nakdong
River meets the sea. In Saha-gu, where Mount Ami, the estuary of the Nakdong
River, and the South Sea converge, streams of different densities continuously
collide and intermingle, generating ever-shifting ecological and cultural
narratives. Against this dynamic backdrop, the festival explores the traces of
industrialization and the landscapes of recovery, articulating them through the
language of contemporary art.

Returning to Dadaepo for the first time in six years, the Sea
Art Festival 2025, 《Undercurrents: Waves Walking on the Water》, takes its keyword “Undercurrents” to mean the hidden streams or
“sub-currents” flowing beneath the surface. These “sub-currents” refer not only
to imperceptible flows at ecological and cultural levels but also to invisible
forces that extend outward, tracing waterways to reveal the unseen, the hidden,
and the marginalized.
The multilayered landscapes of Dadaepo are
transformed into artworks through diverse perspectives and approaches by
artists from varied backgrounds. Twenty-three artists (38 participants) from 17
countries explore Dadaepo’s networks of entanglement among humans and
non-humans, time and nature, working closely with local communities to reflect
on the meanings of coexistence and restoration.

In Dadaepo, where resistance, traces, and recovery coexist, the
artistic proposition of the Sea Art Festival 2025 reveals past, present, and
future landscapes through a polyphonic language. This exhibition proposes modes
of solidarity and coexistence through participatory works, multidisciplinary
research, and community-based collaborations. Invisible voices ripple outward
like waves, while memories, lives, and relationships of this place attempt to
be newly reconnected.
A total of 46 works will be presented, including many sensory,
immersive pieces designed to deepen visitor engagement. In addition, a variety
of accompanying programs—such as guided exhibition tours and children’s
workshops—will encourage active participation and heighten expectations for a
rich exhibition experience.
