From September 21 to November 19, the 12th Seoul MedaiCity Biennale THIS TOO, IS A MAP will take place.
Seoul MediaCity Biennale is a biennale that contemplates the city of Seoul through the lens of media. The 12th Biennale examines the systems that are created across territorial boundaries, such as diaspora and migration, transnational solidarity, underground extraction, and data infrastructure. At the same time, the exhibition resists the rational clarity of maps based on Western cartography and argues for the necessity of working with abstract language and the inevitable unclearness to elicit speculative experiences. Rachael Rakes will lead the Biennale as Artistic Director and Sofia Dourron will serve as Associate Curator.
This project will utilize a variety of exhibition venues in Seoul. The Seoul Museum of Art Seosomun Main Branch will be the main venue for the Biennale, showcasing works in a variety of media based on the global aesthetic perspective that transcends geographical boundaries. In Seoul Museum of History Exhibition Hall B, Jesse Chun’s 시, language for new moons sheds light on the artist’s work on language and power.
The SeMA Bunker, an underground gallery, focuses on the underground world surrounding extraction, pollution, natural resources and the relationship between human, technological, and mineral displacement. Space mm and Sogong Space, located in the underground passageways connecting City Hall and Euljiro station, will feature works by Hyunsun Jeon and Bo Wang. They explore the boundaries between public and private spaces and the virtual and real in everyday life. Finally, Seoul Media Canvas will screen works by young artists working on the future of the city for 20 minutes on the hour from 18:00 – 23:00 during the Biennale.
