“EROS” Installation view at P21 © P21

From August 26 to October 7, P21 will present EROS, an exhibition featuring seven artists: Haneyl Choi, Monica Kim Garza, Birke Gorm, Suyeon Kim, Eunsil Lee, Wu Jiaru, and Xiyadie. The exhibition challenges the perception of Eros as a “pleasure machine” in today’s consumer-driven society and seeks to reclaim its original role. Through their works, the seven artists in the exhibition recall the true meaning of Eros, which embraces the other transcending mere pleasure-seeking.

The exhibition features several paintings by Suyeon Kim, who captures the voyeuristic gaze by fragmenting faces and bodies, and Eunsil Lee, who expresses the energy of desire and taboo in traditional Korean painting. Wu Jiaru blends the human form into the natural world, while Monica Kim Garza captures the female nude in thick, rough brushstrokes. Besides paintings, you’ll also find Birke Gorm’s crafted wooden works, Haneyl Choi’s sculptures, and Xiyadie’s traditional Chinese papercut of mythological images.
