Kukje Gallery will present “Phantom and A
Map,” a solo exhibition by Kyungah Ham, from August 30 to November 3 at K1, K3,
and Hanok. Ahead of Frieze Seoul 2024, which opens on September 4, Kukje
Gallery will be showcasing Ham's work at its booth, and this solo exhibition
will provide a deeper understanding of the artist's work.
In the exhibition, titled “Phantom and A
Map,” the artist shares her view of today's society as she sees and experiences
it, organized into three parts. 'Phantom' is a word that has become a key
conceptual term to describe Ham's work as a whole, referring to all the
instructions and desires that make this society function, collectively directed
by illusions.
While the 2015 exhibition at the Kukje
Gallery explored the dynamics between the visible and invisible under the title
‘Phantom Footsteps,’ this exhibition will present the world (map) that the
artist draws as she endlessly traverses between the world with and without
substance.
The exhibition will showcase the artist's
embroidery project, which has been presented since 2008, in which Ham
collaborates with handicraft workers in North Korea to embroider images related
to socio-political events, as well as abstractions of her emotional reflections
on this society, which she shares with the viewer as a series of poems.
