The Changwon Sculpture Biennale, the only sculpture biennale in Korea, which is in its seventh year, will hold exhibitions from September 27 to November 10 at various locations in Changwon city center, including Seongsan Art Hall, under the theme of “silent apple.”
“silent apple,” the title of the 2024 Biennale, is a phrase from the poem “Ripe Apple” by celebrated poet Kim Hyesoon. Conceptualizing Changwon as a kind of “big apple,” the exhibition takes the act of peeling and carving an apple as a metaphor for peeling away and unfurling the accumulated memories of the city. To this end, the biennale aims to address horizontality in contemporary sculpture, women and labor, urban history and shifts, and changes in community.
“We intend to widen the gap between the city and its sculpture, two things that have always been considered in tandem — taking a closer look at works that rose up or were erected together with Changwon itself, a heavily planned city,” said Artistic Director Seewon Hyun.
The exhibition will be held at various locations across Changwon including Seongsan Art Hall and ChangwonCity Masan MoonShin Art Museum, and also excavating new spaces such as the ancient Seongsan Shell Mound (Historic Site No. 240) and Changwon Cultural Complex Dongnam Ground. 60 teams/70 artists from 16 countries will participate in the biennale, and various programs including symposiums and workshops will bring together domestic and international artists, researchers, citizens, and audiences.
