Exhibition view of “Love Your Clean Feet on Thursday” at Atelier Hermes, Seoul. (November 24, 2023 – January 28, 2024). Courtesy of the artist and Atelier Hermes.

Berlin-based artist Young-jun Tak (b. 1989) is an immigrant, person of color, and queer artist whose work explores human beliefs through sculpture, installation, photography, and video. Interested in religious spaces in Europe, the artist traces the various cultural hybrids within religion that serve as norms and controls. In this exhibition, the artist utilizes two completed films from the contemporary dance film series, and two pieces of sculpture to create a kind of pilgrimage path within the building of Atelier Hermès. Through the exhibition, the artist suggests the possibility that cultural hybridity can embrace minorities beyond conventional norms. Furthermore, Tak reflects on the sociocultural, religious, and political polarizations experienced in Korea and Europe, presenting his perspective on the human society living in the era of ‘post-truth.’
