Perigee Gallery Presents “미련 未練 Mi-ryeon”, a solo exhibition of Youngzoo Im, through July 27.
Youngzoo Im has been interested in mysterious phenomena, unbelievable stories, illusions, hallucinations, possession, past lives, and self-consciousness in order to imagine and understand other dimensions. In this new work, the artist imagines that death, no matter what the circumstances, is something that each of us will reach one day, and when we do, we will be transported to another dimension.
Im suggests that if we view death as both an end and a starting point to move on to another stage, we may have the opportunity to see things in a completely different way after death.
The exhibition is divided into two spaces, and all the videos in the exhibition are played in time, based on 60 minutes. In a separate room, a viewer can experience the experience of finding his or her place in the world through a VR device, and what he or she sees is connected in real time to the two-channel video projected in the inner exhibition hall. The VR experience is pre-registered, and the general public cannot freely enter or exit the space. Also, the two-channel video cannot be viewed simultaneously during the VR experience, so no one can see the entire exhibition at once.
Visitors to the exhibition can experience only one part of the bounded space, or they can move through the different boundaries and experience them sequentially. The exhibition’s composition, which unfolds like a performance, connects to the theme of boundaries and movement in space and time and invites viewers to imagine a new space and time.
