SONGEUN
Art and Cultural Foundation is presenting 《SONGEUN
× Unboxing Project: Generative Forms》, an
exhibition commemorating the 25th anniversary of the SONGEUN Art Award, in
collaboration with the Unboxing Project, through October 10.
Bringing
together 179 artists who have been award recipients or finalists over the
years, the exhibition looks back on SONGEUN’s 25-year history of discovering
and supporting emerging artists in Korean contemporary art.
The
exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Unboxing Project (UBP) in an
effort to bring together a large number of artists in an organic manner. Rather
than relying on exhibition devices or scale, it proposes a curatorial approach
that focuses on the artists and their works themselves, drawing on UBP’s
commissioning model, which has sought to maximize each artist’s distinctive
visual language through a limited format.

Accordingly,
each participating artist was given a box containing four plywood panels, each
measuring 25 × 25 cm—a format symbolizing the 25th anniversary of the SONGEUN
Art Award—and commissioned to create a new work using the materials provided.
While all artists begin from the same physical conditions, the concepts,
relationships, and formal approaches develop in different directions according
to each artist’s practice, generating diverse “generative” variations.
The
exhibition’s conceptual framework, centered on the keyword “generative,” evokes
the zeitgeist of the present, in which artificial intelligence has become part
of everyday life, while also serving as a lens through which to reflect on the
artists’ artistic development since their participation in the Art Award.
The
works, created from these conceptual and physical parameters, do not reduce the
participating artists’ artistic trajectories to a linear narrative. Instead,
they reveal them as generative processes in which divergent paths and
variations overlap and unfold.
《Generative
Forms》 brings together the diverse spectrum of artistic
practices that have emerged within the field of Korean contemporary art through
the SONGEUN Art Award, which has consistently supported emerging artists over
the past 25 years.
