Suwon Museum of Art presents a contemporary art exhibition 《Symbiosis》, on view through March 2, 2026, at its main branch.

‘Symbiosis’ goes beyond harmony and coexistence; it is a process in which different beings and experiences influence one another and form relationships. The contemporary art exhibition 《Symbiosis》 explores the meaning of its title through the distinct artistic languages of three artists: Hyangro Yoon (painting), Jiwan Yu (sound), and Byeong Hun Min (literature).

Hyangro Yoon’s paintings are composed of shaped canvases that move fluidly between fullness and emptiness, oscillating between the bounds of the internal and external. Defying painterly convention, the surfaces are installed in the exhibition space for viewers to sense a flow of irregular time and space.

As the titles of the works suggest, they resemble the patterns of oyster shells cohabiting in clusters. The waves perceived on the surfaces seemingly allude to the adaptability and resilience of oysters which envelop invasive grains of sand, transforming them into pearls.

Jiwan Yu employs sound to summon beings absent from spaces. Taking the murky voices of byeonsa (silent film narrators)1 and field recordings, he invites visitors to experience another dimension of “being together.” His work calls upon invisible presences from a time that has passed, allowing us to hear them for the first time and examine fragments of relationality.

Byeong Hun Min’s literary novels do not offer a singular, complete world, but instead proffer nonlinear arrangements of moments in which the narrator recalls others while passing through multiple cities. The artist presents symbiotic experiences not as fixed but as a continuous flow of dispersed thoughts and scenes, leaving gaps for readers to connect with other beings themselves.

Through these new synesthetic experiences created by diverse media, this exhibition sheds new light on the togetherness that we already belong to but rarely notice. Here, symbiosis is not an enclosed entity but a zone in which differences brush past each other and pause for a moment, before dispersing once more.
