On May 31, 2025, Korean sculptor Park Eun
Sun opened a new art museum, Atelier Park Eun Sun, in Pietrasanta, Tuscany,
Italy. Known as the “mecca of sculpture,” Pietrasanta now houses its first-ever
art museum dedicated to a Korean artist.
The building was designed by world-renowned
architect Mario Botta, known for projects such as the Leeum Museum of Art and
the Kyobo Tower. Inside the museum—with its domed ceiling and soaring vertical
space—visitors will find a range of Park Eun Sun’s sculptural works. The
exterior features lighting that changes color, adding a contemporary flair to
the museum’s architectural presence.

In 1993, the artist moved to Italy—a
country to which he had no prior ties—and has since worked for 32 years in
Pietrasanta, the city where the new space is located. He has drawn attention
from the European art world for his sculptural language that blends Eastern
sensibilities with abstraction. His practice involves introducing cracks,
opening up fissures, and then rejoining unprocessed marble or granite,
breathing new life into the material.
In 2018, Park Eun Sun became the first
Korean artist to receive the International Award of Sculpture Fratelli Rosselli,
presented by the city of Pietrasanta to outstanding sculptors. In 2021, he was
also named an honorary citizen of the city.
Regarding plans for the museum’s operation,
the artist stated that “for the next three months, it will be open to the
public on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, after which it will operate by
appointment only until a foundation is established for its formal management.”
