The Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art presents
the 2025 Permanent Collection Special Exhibition 《Immaterial
to Hypermaterial》 until June 28, 2026. Spanning one
year and three months, this long-term exhibition combines the characteristics
of a permanent exhibition with an initiative to enhance the utilization of the
museum’s collection.
Throughout the exhibition period, various
formats such as collection-based exhibitions, collection-linked exhibitions,
performances, and symposia will be showcased. With "performance" as
its central theme, the exhibition highlights a performative approach as a key
aspect of the viewing experience. To clearly convey this intention to visitors,
the exhibition is structured like a theatrical production, divided into
"Acts" and "Scenes."

Moreover, the exhibition seeks to reexamine
classification systems in relation to the concept of "immateriality"
and the museum’s collection strategy. Traditionally, the prefix "bi (非)" denotes absence or negation, often referring to works
lacking physical materiality. However, in this exhibition, "bi (飛)" is expanded to mean "flight", metaphorically
giving wings to the thoughts and expressions embedded in the artworks, opening
new perspectives for interpretation.
The first act, running from March 20 to
August 31, 2025, will introduce works from the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art’s
collection. Featuring paintings, installations, media art, and performances,
this act will provide an opportunity to explore the conceptual underpinnings of
the artworks and the ideas behind them.

The exhibited works include Family
Photo (2018) by Hyewon Keum, Sound behind Sound #2
(2024) by Oro and Minkyung, Portable Keeper (2009) and
Horn and Tail (2009–2010) by Minouk Lim, Cow
Bathing for Spring Days (2018) by Eunji Cho, and Late
Confession (2019) by Han Seok Kyung.
The works of these five artists are
presented to the audience in the form of "Immaterial (飛) Material." Performance workshops are being held to reveal the
hidden narratives within the first act of the exhibition, with Oro and Minkyung
in April, Eunji Cho in the first half of the year, Hyewon Keum in August, Han
Seok Kyung in September, and Minouk Lim in October.
