The artist Hyunsun Jeon (b. 1989), who
translates autobiographical stories into paintings by alternating between
abstraction and figuration, is in charge of this year's spring window display
at Maison Hermès Dosan Park.
Maison Hermès Dosan Park is not only a
store selling products but also has been contributing to supporting domestic
artists and promoting their works. The first-floor window has been hosting a
window display project every year, collaborating with domestic artists whenever
the seasons change four times a year. Past participating artists include
Meekyoung Shin, Jackson Hong, Hong Buhm, and Yoon Minsub.

This spring, Hyunsun Jeon, who is in charge
of the window display, titled it “Forest and Conversations" and portrayed
an autobiographical life of a painter, the narrator, represented by a male
mannequin.
For Jeon, who works after moving to Jeju
Island, the forest is a space full of lush trees and an excitement of what
encounters may happen, and it serves as inspiration in itself. Sometimes, she
imagines her studio as being in the forest, and thus a video canvas that
captures the process from start to completion is placed in the forest, as if
drawing from life.

In the window with the shape of a house,
there is a connection between the inside and outside through the window, where
the completed painting and everyday objects harmonize, which Jeon describes as
a self-portrait. While taking her dog for walks every day, she comes up with
ideas for her work or thinks about spatial awareness from the horizon of the
Jeju sea. This time, she expressed her own life through a walk with a 'horse,'
symbolizing Hermès.
Lastly, the depiction of a free-spirited
garden and desk in the two windows on either side of the main entrance
metaphorically reflects Jeon’s artistic attitude. She compares the act of
painting to cultivating "my own garden," and says that the desk is
where all ideas begin.
Hyunsun Jeon's work can be seen on the
first floor of Maison Hermès Dosan Park, located at 7 Dosan-daero 45-gil,
Gangnam-gu, Seoul, until May 13.
