《Futures of Images: Narrating Memories, Beyond Re-coloration》, a special exhibition that transforms the city of Jinju into a dynamic platform for contemporary art, is on view through August 25.

Organized by the City of Jinju, the exhibition extends the legacy of 《The Flow of Korean Color Painting》 series, which was presented three times beginning in 2022 and received widespread acclaim.

While maintaining the tradition cultivated through the earlier exhibitions, Futures of Images embraces the aesthetics of “re-coloring”—a practice that seeks not only to apply new colors, but also to reframe habitual ways of seeing the world itself. Bringing together 148 works across painting, sculpture, installation, and media art, the exhibition presents a diverse range of artistic approaches and perspectives.

According to the exhibition preface, 《Futures of Images: Narrating Memories, Beyond Re-coloration》 was conceived as an exploration of the many layers through which images narrate personal histories and memories, and testify to the essence of existence.

Through the perspectives, artistic processes, and works of artists who have shaped the distinctive trajectory of contemporary Korean art, the exhibition examines how images function as vehicles of memory, storytelling, and being.

Artistic Director Kim Kira described the exhibition as “not a one-time event, but a platform for artistic practice where reflections on the future of sustainable art and society coexist with ongoing considerations of tradition and contemporaneity.”

A distinguishing feature of this exhibition is its organic linking of time, space, and artistic inquiry across three key venues that embody the identity of Jinju, each posing a different aesthetic question.

The exhibition unfolds across three sites: 《Inner Landscapes》 at the Jinju Municipal Rhee Seund Ja Art Museum, a space that brings together Eastern spirituality and Western formal aesthetics; 《Memory of the Square》 at the Vehicle Maintenance Depot at Jinju Station, a former industrial site marked by the traces of labor and modern industry; and 《Layers of Time》 at the special exhibition gallery of the Jinju National Museum, where historical artifacts and contemporary modes of thought converge.

Across these three venues, a total of 35 established and mid-career artists come together to present a vast panorama of images, inviting viewers to engage with diverse perspectives on memory, history, and the future of visual culture.
