The Venice Biennale and the Gwangju Biennale are scheduled for 2024. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2025, the Arts Council Korea is planning to hold special exhibitions during the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024. The Gwangju Biennale, celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024, is also preparing various art events.

The Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale opened in 1995 and is considered a crucial platform for promoting Korean art and architecture globally. For the Korea Paviliion’s 30th anniversary, various exhibitions showcasing Korean art, including solo exhibitions by artists such as Lee Bae, Yoo Youngkuk, and Seundja Rhee, are set to be held near the main exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

Also, on November 30, the Arts Council Korea held a nationwide public hearing to prepare for the 30th anniversary of the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Currently, the Council is pursuing mid- to long-term plans, including exhibitions, events, and publications, to explore the operational strategy for the Korea Pavilion. For next year’s Korea Pavilion, artist Koo Jeong A has been selected as the representative artist.

The Gwangju Biennale, one of the largest biennials in Asia, is also scheduled to hold its 15th edition in September 2024. The upcoming event, under the artistic direction of Nicolas Bourriaud, will be themed Pansori – 21st Century Soundscape. In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the Gwangju Biennale plans to host its pavilion projects, a collaborative exhibition between countries, on its largest scale.
