The National Museum of Modern
and Contemporary Art (Museum Director Yoon Bum-mo) and the Government Art Bank
unveiled the final video of the public art project 'Public' on the
Gangnam-daero media platform 'G-LIGHT' on the 22nd.
The project, which was
designed to expand public art, showcased videos created using the collections
of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Art Bank of Korea
and the Government Art Bank on outdoor media platforms to increase people's
cultural enjoyment. This year, the project collaborated with artists selected
from the collections of the Art Bank and the Government Art Bank under the
theme of 'Korean Painting, Women, and Artists'. In April, the program began
with a video by Kim Bo-hee, followed by Hong Fumé and Chung Jong-mi, and on
April 22, the program released a video in collaboration with Kim Ji-pyeong, who
transforms and deconstructs traditional painting conventions to create a
contemporary aesthetic.
Kim Jipyeong (46), who has
been focusing on the free variation of expression and decorativeness in
traditional Korean folk paintings, has expanded her work to critically reflect
on traditional representational conventions and subject consciousness in East
Asian visual culture. The video is reconstructed based on a total of 18 works
by Kim Jipyeong, including 'Mi Chae San Su-do' held in the Art Bank of the
National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. In particular, Kim
Jipyeong's 'Mi Chae San Su-do' is the main link, and the video is organized in
a framed structure that switches from a mountainous landscape to an indoor book
road. In order to harmoniously connect the different works, the video is
designed to showcase dramatic scene changes and fast-paced development.
The fourth installment of
"Public," in collaboration with artist Kim Jipyeong, will be screened
for three minutes every day at 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 p.m. on 18 roadside media
screens and five large outdoor billboards along the road from Gangnam Station
to Sinnonhyeon Station in Seoul until March 5 next year. The video will also be
available on the museum's YouTube and Nuri website, and will be accompanied by
the rhythm of percussive sounds designed to accompany the unfolding of the
video.
"The beauty of folk
tales colorfully interpreted from the perspective of a young artist will bring
a fantastic winter atmosphere to Gangnam Boulevard," said Yoon Bum-mo,
director of MMCA.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of
Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary
Art have established the Government Art Bank and the Art Bank of Korea to
revitalize the domestic art market and enhance people's cultural enjoyment
rights through the purchase, rental and exhibition of artworks. The museum
purchases artworks every year and has a collection of more than 67,000 works of
art, and contributes to the development of Korean art culture by lending and
exhibiting its collection to public institutions, companies, and overseas
missions. The collection can be viewed on the National Museum of Modern and
Contemporary Art's website.
