Amsterdam’s Framer Framed presents “The One-Straw Revolution” through May 19.

The exhibition is inspired by Japanese farmer and philosopher Masanobu Fukuoka’s (1913-2008) book ‘The One-Straw Revolution: An Introduction to Natural Farming (1975).’ The book’s title refers to the technique of scattering straw across fields after harvest, which reflects Fukuoka’s philosophy of cultivating the land in a way that minimizes waste and preserves the balance of the ecosystem. Fukuoka’s philosophy and writings have resonated globally, and the term “permaculture,” short for “permanent culture,” has been coined among scientists and scholars.

The exhibition’s curator, iLiana Fokianaki, has been studying permaculture as a model for creating the exhibition, and this show marks the first realization of her research. The show focuses on the core concepts of permaculture: living with others and fair sharing. The works in the exhibition explore questions of permanence and sustainability, addressing the desire to connect with ancestral philosophies, knowledge systems that escaped the colonial violence of Western modernity, and communities operating counter to neoliberal and capitalist models.

Participating artists include Edgar Calel, Kyriaki Goni, Irene Kopelman, Uriel Orlow, Eliana Otta, Bik Van der Pol, Citra Sasmita, Denise Ferreira da Silva & Arjuna Neuman, Nora Severios, and Himali Singh Soin.
