PS
CENTER is hosting an experimental exhibition, “YOU GOT STOOD UP TODAY,” which
interprets advertising imagery within the realm of art, on view through January
25.
“YOU
GOT STOOD UP TODAY” features five advertising directors with careers spanning
20 to 40 years in the industry. This project is an opportunity for them to step
outside the mesmerizing world of commodities they created, reflect on it, and
produce and showcase works based on their experiences.
Directors
Kang Hanyoung, Moon Saeng, Kim Jongwon, Easysong, and Chae Eunseok have
continuously crafted images, from black-and-white TV commercials to the era of
high-speed internet. Their commercials and slogans symbolically and creatively
captured iconic stars, products, and services of their time, remaining
memorable to this day. Collectively, these directors have produced over 2,000
commercials.
The
transition from directing fictional narratives in advertising to directing
themselves within the fictional realm of art is both humbling and challenging.
While both advertising and art captivate and delight us through imaginary
imagery, they differ in their central intent and ultimate goals. Both are
rooted in the tradition of pursuing novelty, but one focuses on the product as
the subject of the work, while the other centers on the human creator as the
working subject.
“YOU GOT STOOD UP TODAY” is expected to bring a fresh breeze and wave into the context of art and fine art, as these active directors, who have continuously captured their own and our moments, step out of the filming set and into the exhibition space.
