Gyeongnam Art Museum presents its
collection exhibition “GAM Collection: Recollection in the Future” until
October 6.
This exhibition classifies and analyzes the
museum’s 1,439-piece collection, offering visitors insight into the key artists
and works that trace the major trends in Korean and Gyeongnam art over the past
100 years. Visitors can view works by renowned masters of Korean art, such as
Park Saeng-Kwang, Kim Chong Yung, Nam June Paik, Lee Seung Ja, and Lee Ufan,
all in one space. The exhibition is spread across seven sections in the museum on
the first and second floors.
The section ‘Modern Art and the
Introduction of Western Painting’ presents works from the early 20th century,
showcasing the transition from traditional Korean painting to the introduction
of Western styles. ‘New Artistic Experiments: The Development of Abstraction’
explores the rise of abstraction in the 1950s, featuring paintings and
sculptures by artists who led avant-garde experiments in abstract forms. ‘Seeking
the Identity of Korean Art’ displays works from the 1970s that reflect the
unique emotions of Korea, including monochromatic paintings and minjung art
(people’s art).
In ‘Korean
Characteristics and Korean Painting,’ modern approaches to traditional Korean
painting and works featuring uniquely Korean themes are introduced. The ‘Diversification
of Contemporary Art’ section focuses on the various artistic forms and themes
that emerged after the 1990s. ‘The Emergence of New Media: Media Art’
highlights media art as a central component of contemporary art. Finally, the
section ‘Collection and Usage of GAM Collection’ presents an analysis of the
museum’s collection data, revealing the current state of its acquisitions and
usage, alongside related archival materials.
