Art Sonje Center presents “Jeongsu Woo: Three Devils by the Bedside” at The Ground through June 30.
Jeongsu Woo is an artist whose work has deconstructed and rejoined established narrative relationships as he refers to images from different eras, including Renaissance paintings, icons and historical motifs from medieval scriptures and philosophical texts, illustrations from genre fiction, and cartoons.
Traversing the worlds of story and painting, from European medieval literature and art to one of its contemporary subcultures, ‘Goth,’ Woo has explored the possibilities of new image narratives by allegorically reconstructing the anxieties and depressions, desires and challenges, fears and frustrations, failures and triumphs of his contemporaries. This exhibition presents a cross-section of the artist’s challenges.
Through his constant drawing and artistic exploration of visual culture, Woo aims to reveal the allergies of insomnia, which is expanding into a pathological phenomenon in contemporary society, through this exhibition. It is worth noting the artist’s challenge to produce a cynical satire on the neurotic phenomena of contemporary socio-cultural life while remaining faithful to the inherent allegorical function of painting.
