The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Arts Council Korea release research and criticism books on 29 artists and provide online and offline reading services as a result of the ‘Artist Survey, Research, and Criticism’ support program, which has been in place since 2022.
The ‘Artist Research-Study-Critique Support Program’ selected 29 Korean artists who are representative of Korean contemporary art or have high growth potential, such as those who have won the ‘Korea Artist Prize’ and participated in the Venice Biennale, and supported the production and distribution of criticism books in Korean and English.
For the 29 artists, a total of 350 art historians, critics, archivists, and translators participated over the past two years, including 46 international experts, including Hans Ulrich Obrist (Director of the Serpentine Galleries, London), Jacob Fabricius (Co-Artistic Director of the Korean Pavilion at the ’24 Venice Biennale), and other leading critics from leading international museums.
The resulting publications consisted of three e-books per artist, a ‘leaflet’ and a ‘brochure’ with a basic introduction to the artist, and a ‘catalogue’ with a detailed archive of works and all research materials, for a total of 87 publications for 29 artists, allowing visitors to explore their artistic world from various levels.
The ‘leaflet’ and ‘brochure’ can be viewed online at the website of the ARKO Art Center, an agency of the Arts Council Korea, the Digital Archives for the Arts (DA-Arts) of the ARKO Arts Archives, and the Asia Art Archive (AAA) in Hong Kong, an overseas archive institution, while the ‘catalogue’ can be viewed by visiting the ARKO Arts Archives (reading room on the 2nd floor of the Seoul Arts Center) and the archive on the 2nd floor of the ARKO Art Center. In addition, the catalogues of selected artists, including Sojung Jun, who was a finalist for the MMCA’s Korea Artist Prize in ’23, and artists Dabal Kim and Ko Seunghyun, are available for free download at Kyobo Bookstore and yes24.
