The first English-language monograph on the artistic world of Shin Sung Hy (1948–2009),『Shin Sung Hy: Coller – Couturer - Nouer』will be published by Rizzoli.

Throughout Shin Sung Hy‘s career, Shin enlivened various material qualities of the essential ingredients of painting—canvas, support, and paint—in pursuit of ontological questions regarding illusion and representation, two- and three-dimensionality, and the artist’s own body.

Woven together like warp and weft, his paintings involve tearing and fragmenting the canvas and collaging it onto the surface, thereby posing a fundamental question about the flat, superficial conventions of painting while also expressing the artist’s intention to treat the canvas as an object in its own right.

Shin Sung Hy’s artistic experiments have left a significant mark on the history of modern and contemporary Korean art, and continue to exert a lasting influence not only in Korea but also across the global art world.

The first English-language monograph on Shin Sung Hy,『Shin Sung Hy: Coller – Couturer - Nouer』features contributions by Yeon Shim Chung, Professor in the Department of Art Studies at Hongik University, and Maël Bellec, Chief Curator at the Musée Cernuschi, both of whom offer an in-depth exploration of the artist’s practice and its significance.

In addition, the monograph will be released on the opening day of Shin’s first posthumous retrospective in France, 《Shin Sung Hy: Coller – Couturer – Nouer》. The exhibition presents around 30 works, including early works from the Collage series (1983–1992), which began in Paris, as well as major works from the 'Couturage' series (1993–1997) and 'Nouage' series (1997–2009).
