The first English-language monograph on the
artistic world of Shin Sung Hy (1948–2009),『Shin Sung Hy: Coller – Couturer - Nouer』will be published by Rizzoli.
Throughout Shin Sung Hy‘s career, Shin
enlivened various material qualities of the essential ingredients of
painting—canvas, support, and paint—in pursuit of ontological questions
regarding illusion and representation, two- and three-dimensionality, and the
artist’s own body.

Woven together like warp and weft, his
paintings involve tearing and fragmenting the canvas and collaging it onto the
surface, thereby posing a fundamental question about the flat, superficial
conventions of painting while also expressing the artist’s intention to treat
the canvas as an object in its own right.
Shin Sung Hy’s artistic experiments have
left a significant mark on the history of modern and contemporary Korean art,
and continue to exert a lasting influence not only in Korea but also across the
global art world.
