London, Young Artists Taking the Predominant Places of Old Masters in the Market

In recent three years, young generation of artists of under 45 with instagram as their basis has become the dominant target in the art market, with old masters’ works taking only 4 percent of Sotheby and Christie’s sales in 2022 according to the ArtTactic.

The most representative example is British artist Flora Yukhnovich(b. 1990), whose ‘Warm, Wet ’N’ Wild (2020)’ was sold at $3,600million in March 2022 at Sotheby’s auction.

Rachel Whiteread Urges End to London Trafalgar Square Fourth Plinth Commissions

Turner Prize-winning artist Rachel Whiteread(b. 1963), who has made prestigious public sculptures, calls for an end to Trafalgar Square Forth Plinth commissions on the grounds that the works are not finding proper homes after they come down from the plinth.

In an interview, she suggested that “it has done its time as a plinth”, and that “one of the most interesting things that could be done now is just to have it left empty”.

Adam McEwen’s soon-to-open show at Gagosian in London will include new pieces of hia ‘Obituary’ series. McEwen’s fictional obituaries are of people who are still alive and who have played determining roles in the contemporary environment, technology, spirituality, culture, and identity.

This time there will be death news of car racer Lewis Hamilton, climate protester Greta Thunberg, and musicians Grace Jones and Dolly Parton. Visitors will be led to presume and imagine the world of their absence.

Tate Britain: Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s solo exhibition, ‘Fly In The League With The Night’

Tate Britain is showing British artist Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s (b. 1977) solo exhibition, ‘Fly In The League With The Night’.

Her fictional figures, painted in instinctive and spontaneous bursts, enigmatic and yet familiar, raise questions of identity and representation. Her work is recognized as contributing to the renaissance in painting the Black figure.

The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program is one of the most renowned residencies for international artists from versatile areas. Fellows stay and work in Berlin for a year and also participate in Berlin’s public programs. The 2023 fellows of visual art are, including Korean Artist Jiyoung Yoon, Esvin Alarcón Lam, Sam Vernon, and Helena Uambembe.

Applications open: seventh edition of Future Generation Art Prize

PinchukArtCentre(Kyiv, Ukraine) announced the open call for seventh edition of the Future Generation Art Prize. The Future Generation Art Prize is a biannual global contemporary art prize with the intention to discover, recognize and give long-term support to a future generation of artists.

All artists aged from 18 to 35 working in any medium are invited to apply. The artists nominated for the shortlist will be commissioned to participate in the Venice Biennale. The main prize winner receives 100,000 USD split between a 60,000 USD cash prize and a 40,000 USD investment in their practice. 

Past winners include Lynette Yiadom Boakye, Cinthia Marcelle, Dineo Seshee Bopape. Korean artist Mirae Lee, before going to Venice biennale in 2022, had applied and received special prize in 2021.

Entries can be submitted online from January 16 until April 30 at futuregenerationartprize.org.
