Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía presents “One-Sequence Spaces,” a solo exhibition by Ulla von Brandenburg (b. 1974), on view through March 10.

Ulla von Brandenburg’s work draws on her early experience as a stage designer. Her installations, films, murals, and performances elaborately use stage production techniques, combining the language of the stage with her interests in psychoanalysis, magic, and ritual to critique social structures and explore alternatives.

In this exhibition, the artist’s installations of colorful drapery and curtains blur the distinction between stage and audience and surround the walking audience in the hall with a sense of fiction. The audience participates in the work and becomes part of the scene, thus blurring the traditional hierarchy of audience and stage.
