The Mori Art Museum opened in 2003 atop Mori Tower in Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills neighborhood. Founded by Japanese real estate entrepreneur Mori Minoru (b. 1934), it has a vast collection of contemporary art.

On April 19, the museum will celebrate its 20th anniversary with the opening of the exhibition “World Classroom: Contemporary Art through School Subjects.” The exhibition examines contemporary art through the lens of school subjects. Using the analogy of artists as “researchers” exploring uncharted territory and art as the “classroom of the world,” the exhibition presents works by more than 1,600 artists from the museum’s collection in eight sections: language and literature, sociology, philosophy, mathematics, science, music, physical education, and transdisciplinary.

Some of the most iconic works of 20th-century conceptual art, such as Joseph Kosuth’s ‘One and Three Shovels (1965)’ and Joseph Beuys’s blackboard from his lecture at the University of Tokyo, are included. New works by prominent contemporaries such as Haegue Yang, Jacob Kirkegaard, Park McArthur, and Miyanaga Aiko will also be on view.
