The Convergence of Art & Technology
The development of technology and the expansion of the digital world are influencing not only how we act and think but also how we perceive and value art. The art ecosystem has evolved in response to this change and the need to update communication methods.
Many artists have been constantly searching for ways to present new experiences outside of existing methods and offer to perceive our surroundings through new media. And various art institutions are holding exhibition programs to support and introduce new art forms that incorporate new technologies.
Alternative Space LOOP presents the works of Hanbee Kim, Space XX will show the works of Jung Seung, and the Seoul Art Space Geumcheon will display the works of Sinae Yoo.

HANBEE KIM SOLO EXHIBITION: AGA

Hanbee Kim (b. 1996) creates spaces, performances, and interactive artworks to express the changing meaning of the body as technology advances.
As a female artist in her 20s, Hanbee Kim presents works that touch on issues surrounding the current low fertility rate in Korea. “AGA,” which means “baby” in Korean, is a companion machine that requires human care and an object that represents the social perspective of the younger generation. The movement of “AGA” is based on energy harvesting and hall sensor devices and is entirely dependent on the audience’s movement.
The artworks in the exhibition encourage the audience to consider the social problems that contribute to low birth rates, such as the gaps in the labor market, intensifying competition in society, inflexible family norms, real estate price problems, increased financial burden, and a growing sense of relative deprivation among society members. Kim also suggests that these problems in Korean society are not limited to a specific class but rather affect all members of society and require everyone’s participation to be resolved.
Artist Hanbee Kim has had a solo exhibition at Osisun & Underground Theater (Seoul, 2021) and participated in group exhibitions held at Gallery Raon (Seoul, 2020) and Art Space the Necessaries (Seoul, 2020).

Jung Seung (b. 1976) creates installations, media sculptures, and interactive images using a variety of media. Based on engineering theories and a dystopian worldview, the artist Jung Seung combines art and technology to pose questions regarding the nature of human beings and life. He especially talks about how the mass production system in a capitalist society affects people and how it endangers human dignity.
Since 2016, the artist has been conducting visual experimental projects centered on the subjects of life, data, and outer space. Recently, Jung has been contemplating and researching the relationship between human life and the digital world. Jung’s solo exhibition at Space XX will be the first to showcase the results of his recent research.
Jung has held solo exhibitions at Alternative Space LOOP (Seoul, 2021), Amado Art Space (Seoul, 2019), Asia Culture Center, Creators in Lab (Gwangju, 2018), and AKI Gallery (Taipei, 2017). His works were also featured in a number of group exhibitions held at institutions such as the MMCA’s Sculpture Park (Gwacheon), the Saatchi Gallery (London), the Nam June Paik Art Center (Yongin), and the Seoul Art Space Geumcheon (Seoul).

Sinae Yoo’s works are expressed in various media, including drawing, video, sound, ceramics, and installation. Yoo uses cultural elements derived from pop and entertainment culture in conjunction with digital techniques to explore the cultural phenomenon in which masculine tastes affect individual tastes and to describe individuals and the marginalized in the capitalist system, as well as the moral command structure that exists in our society.
Through Derivative Messiah, Yoo suggests a Messiah, an intelligence capable of transcending the limitations of capitalism and proposing a new system. The presented works will be created using technologies such as 3D modeling.
Sinae Yoo has held numerous solo exhibitions at Studio Concrete (Seoul, 2020), FUTURA Centre for Contemporary Art (Prague, 2019), and Kunsthaus Langenthal (Switzerland, 2016), as well as group exhibitions at the BB&M Gallery (Seoul, 2022), WESS (Seoul, 2021), Serpentine Gallery (online, London, 2020), Kunsthalle Bern (Bern, 2018), and Boan 1942 (Seoul, 2018).
