New York’s Gladstone Gallery Will Open in Seoul

Gladstone Gallery, headquartered in New York, announced that it will open an outpost in Seoul’s Gangnam District. Although the opening date is undecided, Park Hee-jin, who has worked at Kukje Gallery, will be leading the new gallery.

This October, the gallery first participated in KIAF SEOUL, Korea’s largest art fair, and presented works by French contemporary artist Philippe Parreno, American artist Ian Cheng, and Korean-American artist Anicka Yi, who is also the sixth artist of the Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern in London.

Gladstone, which celebrated its 40th-anniversary last year, is a contemporary art gallery founded by American art dealer and film producer Barbara Gladstone.

Gladstone is known for staging Matthew Barney’s first New York solo show in 1991, and now the gallery is representing numerous established artists, including Anish Kapoor, Ugo Rondinone, and Rirkrit Tiravanija.

The gallery recently joined hands with famous art dealer Gavin Brown, and currently operates three galleries in New York, one in Brussels, and a branch in Los Angeles that just opened this summer.

As Seoul has recently emerged as an Asian art hub, world-renowned galleries are opening branches in Seoul.

Germany’s KÖNIG opened a branch last March at Cheongdam-dong, and Austria’s Thaddaeus Ropac opened in October in the Hannam-dong area. Pace Gallery was one of the first to land in Seoul in 2017, followed by Perrotin and Lehmann Maupin.
