White Cube Gallery: “Anselm Kiefer – Finnegans Wake”

The White Cube gallery in Bermondsey, London, presents “Anselm Kiefer – Finnegans Wake” through August 20. Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) is one of the leading figures of post-war contemporary art, whose work deals with the history and memory of post-war Germany.

Making references to texts from various fields, including poetry, philosophy, religion, and science is Kiefer’s distinctive characteristic, and in this exhibition, his new works brought their motives from James Joyce’s 1939 novel ‘Finnegans Wake.’ Concrete, copper, glass bottles, and unreadable books made of lead fill the exhibition space, with quotes from Joyce’s book inscribed throughout the works.

The exhibition is the final of a trilogy that Kiefer has been showing at White Cube Gallery since 2016. In 2016, “Walhalla” explored Norse mythology, and in 2019, “Superstrings, Runes, The Norns, Gordian Knot” featured paintings, sculptures, and installations based on Greek mythology.

Berlinische Galerie: Stories of Extinct Species “Böhler & Orendt: The Sweet Certainty”

Installation view of “Böhler & Orendt: The Sweet Certainty” at Berlinische Galerie, Berlin, 2023. Photo: Harry Schnitger

The Berlinische Galerie presents “Böhler & Orendt: The Sweet Certainty” through August 14. Matthias Böhler (*1981) and Christian Orendt (*1980) have been working as a duo since 2008, using wit, irony, and black humor to tell stories about human overuse of resources, environmental degradation, and the extinction of other species by mankind.

The exhibition is in two parts. On the floor is a model of a giant ape and a group of workers gathered around it to collect raw materials. On the other side is a model of a spaceship that resembles a lotus bud.

Within it is a series of photo collages that imagine extinct animals emerging with mystical powers to mourn the Earth and rid it of what threatens it. The series is titled “The Sweet Certainty of Deliverance from the Darkness that Surrounds Us.”

(The Sweet Certainty of Deliverance from the Darkness that Surrounds Us)”이다.

Climate Activists Call For MoMA’s Board Chair with Ties to Fossil Fuel Industry to Step Down

USA_New York

As the climate crisis calls for changes in museum operations, climate activists have recently become more vocal about the sources of museum funding. On June 6, during the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) annual fundraising ‘Party in the Garden,’ New York environmental activists protested outside the museum, demanding the removal of board chair Marie-Josée Kravis.

Kravis’s husband, Henry Kravis, co-founded Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), which has invested billions of dollars in oil and gas companies, and protesters objected to Kravis’s close ties to the fossil fuel industry until the police dispersed them.

There was a similar civil protest in the UK recently. British oil giant BP became a patron of the British Museum in 1996 and until recently, funded the operations of the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Scottish Ballet, and the Royal Opera House. However, in the past few years, there have been protests against museums accepting funding from fossil fuel companies, and the British Museum announced in early June that it would end its BP sponsorship deal.

Joan Brown’s Private Paintings at Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh

USA_Pittsburgh

The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, presents a retrospective of Joan Brown (1938-1990) through September 24. Joan Brown, an artist from the San Francisco Bay Area, is best known for her large-scale portraits of her family and herself.

Characterized by autobiographical subject matter and a playful, fantastical imagination, her works were once dismissed by critics as insincere but have recently been gaining reevaluation. The exhibition was first shown at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SF MoMA) until March and arrived at the Carnegie Museum of Art last May.

The exhibition chronologically traces Brown’s progression from abstract paintings from her art school period in San Francisco in the 1950s to figurative paintings in later years. It delivers Brown’s unique approach to painting, in which she sought to portray her private life without caring for art world recognition.
