“Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure” Opens in Los Angeles
“Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure” opened on March 31 at the Grand LA Center in Los Angeles. Co-curated by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, sisters of American graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), the exhibition features never-before-seen paintings, drawings, and personal ephemera by the artist. The exhibition also includes a reconstruction of Basquiat’s studio. “Jean-Michel Basquiat: King Pleasure” premiered in New York in 2022 to an enthusiastic reception.
Born to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother, Basquiat worked in the New York art scene. He was dubbed the “black Picasso” and was credited with elevating graffiti to art. He became an icon of New York pop art in the 1980s, with his graffiti covering a wide range of subjects, including pop culture, social phenomena such as racism and the gap between rich and poor, stars of black origin, and autobiographical motifs.

Frida Kahlo’s Immersive Exhibition Arrives in São Paulo

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is currently on immersive display in Brazil. A collaboration between the Frida Kahlo Foundation and the Spanish digital art company Layers of Reality, the immersive exhibition “Frida Kahlo: The Life of an Icon” has toured Europe, North America, and Oceania before coming to Brazil. The show, which runs through April 30, focuses on Kahlo’s biography and uses digital technologies such as holography, 360-degree projection, and virtual reality to allow visitors to spend time surrounded by her iconic styles.
Mexican-born artist Frida Kahlo’s life was marked by a series of events, including a car accident at a young age that left her paralyzed. But despite her suffering, she continued to thrive as a creative force, spearheading surrealism in Latin America and continues to inspire audiences today.

New York’s Guggenheim Museum Hires First Associate Curator of Art and Technology

On March 27, the museum announced its appointment of Noam Segal as the first associate curator of the initiative. Segal will be involved in research and exhibition operations at the Guggenheim in general, not only in art and technology. The appointment of Segal with her expertise in technology signals the increasing importance of digital technologies in contemporary art.
Segal is a researcher with expertise in digital art, advanced screen technologies, robotics, spatial sound systems, algorithms, AI, quantum computing, and other emerging technologies. She holds a Ph.D. in hermeneutics and cultural studies. She has constantly practiced an interdisciplinary approach, dealing with the intersection of the digital, political, and social in contemporary art.
