London’s Stephen Friedman Gallery opened “Sasha Gordon: The Flesh Disappears, But Continues To Ache” last week as part of the London Gallery Weekend. The exhibition runs through July 22.

It is Asian American artist Sasha Gordon’s (b. 1998) first solo show in Europe. In the exhibition, the artist presents new works in which she translated her self-portraits into paintings in the form of animals, plants, and geometric shapes. Her bodies, which appear to be anthropomorphic objects or animals, are surrealistically transformed, but the depiction technique is hyper-realistic.

Through her deformed avatars, Gordon explores her own identity and feelings as a young, queer, Asian American woman. She expresses her experience of being excluded and marginalized from body norms and conventions and challenges constraints on femininity.

The Atelier des Lumières in Paris since 2013 has specialized in digital art. Currently, it is showing Marc Chagall’s (1887-1985) digital exhibition “Chagall, Paris – New York,” on view through January 7, 2024.

Chagall was born in Russia and traveled between Paris and New York during the war. The modern art movements in France and the United States greatly influenced him. The exhibition features recurring themes and images from Chagall’s work from two cities. Chagall’s allegorical animal characters, circus, opera, and biblical motifs reveal his Russian cultural heritage. In addition, classical music, klezmer, and jazz fill the exhibition space, evoking the culture Chagall and his contemporaries shared.
