“In Between the Notes,” Group show of Sound Artists in Kolkata

In Between the Notes

Kolkata’s Experimenter gallery presents “In Between the Notes,” a group exhibition of sound artists through October 14. The show’s title quotes the legendary Indian classical singer Pandit Pran Nath (1918-1996), who spoke about the space occupied by the time in between notes. Pran Nath’s music was foundational for sound art by avant-garde artists in the 1970s.

With sound and silence, the exhibition reflects on how we listen and seeks to create a space for the shared experience of sound resonance. The exhibition explores a wide range of practices and experiments with auditory experiences, featuring music, sound, and noise from the history and present time. The works in the exhibition directly utilize sound as a material or are based on the artist’s aural influences and training.

The opening on August 25, from 6 to 8 p.m., features performances based on seminal works by historic 20th-century sound artists, including La Monte Young, Benjamin Patterson, John Cage, Earle Brown, and Terry Riley.

Participating artists include Lala Rukh, Parul Thacker, Superhero Sighting Society (Taus Makhacheva & Sabih Ahmed), Biraaj Dodiya, and Samson Young.

QAGOMA (Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art) presents “The Favourite,” a solo exhibition by Australian painter Michael Zavros (b. 1974), on view through October 24. Zavros has established himself as one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists with his technically prow, sumptuous realism combined with surreal settings.

His recurring subjects include fashion magazines, European palaces, luxury cars, his children, Narcissus, still lifes, and self-portraits. His figures seem to flaunt high-end goods, luxury, fashion, and appearance, and his work is understood as an ambivalent satire on Australian consumerism and individualism. The exhibition presents paintings, sculptures, photographs, and videos created by the artist over the past 25 years, divided into thematic sections.

STPI Creative Workshop & Gallery: Jane Lee’s Laozi Inspired Paper Castings

STPI Creative Workshop & Gallery presents “In Praise of Silence,” a solo exhibition by Singaporean artist Jane Lee (b. 1963), through September 3. The show features Lee’s new works made with the paper casting technique that Lee developed in collaboration with STPI.

Jane Lee is widely known for creating tactile paintings using three-dimensional and colorful materials within the frame. Lee’s current solo exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) also emphasizes the playful impression of her works.

In this exhibition, however, the monochromatic, restrained aesthetic stands out. Eggshells made of paper and inscribed with mantras on the inside are a recurring motif in the new works, and Lee has also experimented with techniques for delicately attaching various minerals to handmade paper. The title of the exhibition is taken from the Japanese writer Jun’ichirō Tanizaki (1886-1965), and the main idea of the exhibition, which explores light and shadow, black and white, yin and yang as fundamental principles for understanding the world around us, is based on the Chinese philosopher Laozi’s Dao De Jing. The recurring figure of the egg in the new works symbolizes the concepts of the absolute, the primordial, rebirth, and the essence.
