Exhibitions at Nonprofit Art Organizations in Seoul in January 2022
K-ARTNOW.COM introduces art exhibitions currently on view at nonprofit art organizations in Seoul. Alternative Space LOOP, Chapter II, and Atelier Hermés are featuring a number of Korean and international artists this month.
Established in 1999, Alternative Space LOOP, one of the first-generation alternative spaces in Korea, is presenting A Players (蠱毒한 플레이어) through February 6, 2022.
The word 고독 (godok) used in the exhibition’s Korean title has a double meaning. Today, the word is used primarily to denote solitude (孤獨). The second definition (蠱毒) derives from a spell explained in an ancient Chinese history book that describes the way a powerful poison can be collected in a small jar from the last surviving creature that went through a competition. This method is somewhat similar to today’s society, in which individuals have to prove their ability to survive in highly competitive situations. The exhibition is designed like a table-top, role-playing game in which all of the participating curators and artists have to follow the rules established by the main curator, Je Won Yoon.
The participating artists are Heesoo Kwon, Mang mu, Min Guhong Mfg, Mint Park, Insane Park, Seongjin Jeong, and Dahye Hyun, and the collaborative Curators are Inhwa Yeom, Jooyoung Oh, Sun Mi Lee, Jintaeg Jang, and Hyundae Cho.
Anna Han’s Somewhere Above the Ground will be on view at CHAPTER II YARD through February 26, 2022.
Anna Han transforms the exhibition space deliberately by changing the color of the walls, injecting light, or adjusting the structure. The multi-colored, pastel-toned ellipses in the exhibition represent the ever-changing sky as well as the artist’s changing emotions. Han transformed the enclosed exhibition space to reflect the infinite depths of the heavens and express the longing for autonomy after the COVID-19 outbreak and hope for the future.
U.PINE MED, a Korean medical device company, and Gallery Baton established Chapter II in Yeonnam-dong in 2016 to support young Korean and international contemporary artists who have just begun their careers as professional artists. Seongsu-dong’s Chapter II Yard opened in 2020.
Formes Du Transfert at Atelier Hermés features seven European-based contemporary artists through January 30, 2022.
Formes Du Transfert commemorates the 10th year of the Hermès Artists in Residency program. Since 2010, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès has selected four contemporary artists each year to discover and reinterpret the materials and techniques used in the Hermès workshops. The exhibition uses leather as its theme this year and borrows the concept of “transference,” a psychoanalysis mechanism, which refers to the realization of a childhood desire in a present-day encounter.
Participating artists are Lucie Picandet, Vassilis Salpistis, Bérengère Hénin, Sébastien Gouju, Anastasia Douka, Io Burgard, and Yuhsin U Chang.
Fondation d’entreprise Hermès founded Atelier Hermés in Seoul to support contemporary artists and encourage their experimental artistic practices. The foundation also maintains exhibition spaces in Brussels, and Tokyo.
