Baden-Baden’s Frieder Burda Museum is full of life by artificial beings. Now presenting “Transformers-Masterpieces of the Frieder Burda Collection in Dialogue With Artificial Beings,” the museum is originally home to masterpieces of great masters such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Gerhard Richter.

However, in “Transformers,” the museum juxtaposes its classic collection with modern-day artificial beings. Enchanting human avatars, moving and learning robots, and a talking mouse juxtaposed with the classic paintings, the exhibition arranges a hybrid, utopian experience that addresses the transformation of modern society and the mechanization of life.

The participating artists who created the ‘transformers’ in the exhibition are Louisa Clement (b. 1987), Ryan Gander (b. 1976), Timur Si-Qin (b. 1984), and Jordan Wolfson (b. 1980).

Festival of the City, Rotterdam Art Week

Van Nelle Fabriek. Credit: ART ROTTERDAM

From February 9 to 12, Van Nelle Fabriek hosted the 24th Rotterdam Art Week, featuring artists from art, architecture, and design. The Van Nelle Fabriek is a former industrial factory that is iconic of the modernist style and was listed on UNESCO World Heritage in 2014. Since then, it has been widely used for the city’s businesses and events.

For this art week, some parts of the former factory were converted into a sculpture park to showcase the works of Rotterdam-based artists. Compared to art weeks in large cities in the Americas and Asia, Rotterdam Art Week has a more public and festival-like character.

In addition to the main exhibition and shows at the major galleries, there were colorful programs such as exhibition opportunities for artists just beginning their carrier, a symposium on the positive effects of drugs, video projections on the 185-meter observation tower Euromast, and a dance night for everyone.

Irish Museum of Modern Art: Patricia Hurl Retrospective “Irish Gothic”

Patricia Hurl, ‘Study for The Kerry Babies Trial,’ 1984, Collection Irish Museum of Modern Art, Purchase, 2021.

IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern Art) will present “Patricia Hurl-Irish Gothc,” a retrospective of Irish painter Patricia Hurl (b. 1943) from February 10 until May 21, 2023. Although she has been working actively since the late 1970s, this is the first time she presents her comprehensive oeuvre is a museum.

Hurl paints figures of blurred faces and shapes with urgent marks of brushstrokes. She is most celebrated for her works of 1980s which depicted women’s lives and emotions in Irish homes at the time.

She is now an active member of ‘Na Cailleacha,’ a community of eight elderly women artists in Ireland. The exhibition will provide an overview of Hurl’s work over the past 40 years.
