Galerie Christophe Guye: Photographer Roger Ballen's existential Psychodrama
Galerie Christophe Guye, a photography gallery in Zurich, Switzerland, presents “A Journey through the Ballenesque.” The solo exhibition by Roger Ballen (b. 1950) runs through August 26.
Roger Ballen is an American-born photographer, working in Africa since 1982. He began his career as a documentary photographer but gradually turned to fictionalized, staged photography to address the repressed human unconscious. Ballen describes his work as an existential psychodrama that reveals repressed human thoughts and desires. His themes include chaos and order, madness and unruly states of being, human relationships with the animal world, life and death, universal archetypes of the human psyche, and the experience of otherness.
The exhibition features five series of photographs – ‘Colour Work,’ ‘The Theatre of Apparitions,’ ‘Asylum of the Birds,’ ‘Boarding House,’ and ‘Shadow Chamber.’ ‘The Theatre of Apparitions’ was shown at the Venice Biennale in 2022, while ‘Colour Work’ is the latest work by the artist, who has only recently begun producing color work after more than 50 years of black-and-white photography.

Poland, National Museum in Gdańsk: Sainer, i.e. PrzemysłAw Blejzyk’s Contemporary Landscapes
The National Museum in Gdańsk presents “Sainer: Colour,” a solo exhibition by Przemysław Blejzyk (b. 1988), through October 22.
Blejzyk, known by his stage name Sainer, is a Polish painter who, as a student, formed the duo Etam Cru with Mateusz Gapski (b. 1987, known as Bezt). The duo gained international recognition for their large-scale murals, characterized by a magical realism style with intricate details influenced by comic books, illustration, animation, and classical paintings.
Since 2016, Blejzyk has stopped working on murals and has been creating large-scale paintings reminiscent of digital compositing with color patches. He references the forms and colors of classical Polish landscape painters while experimenting with compositions and colors that reflect contemporary image consumption. The relationship between music and painting is also a recent interest of his. The exhibition presents a selection of Blejzyk’s recent works.

Tucci Russo: Conrad Shawcross’s Science Inspired Intricate Mechanical Sculptures
Tucci Russo in Turin, Italy, presents “In The Shadows Lie Eternity,” a solo exhibition by British sculptor Conrad Shawcross (b. 1977), on view through October 7. Shawcross is known for his sculptures that utilize sophisticated mechanical principles to express scientific discovery and thoughts. He has created many monumental public sculptures in the UK and is the youngest member of the Royal Academy of Arts.
The exhibition features recent works of Shawcross exploring light, geometry, and perception. ‘Patterns of Absence’ is a circular wall-installed sculpture measuring two meters in diameter. Two colored perforated disks rotate in opposite directions, creating dynamic light patterns. ‘Slow Arc Inside a Cube XV’ presents a structure that allows the viewer to perceive the relationship between shadows and the source machine of the shadows. Other works on display include ‘Spindle,’ a small glass sculpture that symbolizes the speed of the sun; ‘Paradigm Vex,’ inspired by the philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn’s (1922-1996) concept of paradigm; and study prints of the ‘Patterns of Absence.’
