Art Basel Hong Kong Returns to Its Pre-pandemic Scale in March

Credit: Art Basel

Art Basel Hong Kong 2024 will return to its pre-pandemic scale in March. The VIP Preview will be on view from March 26 to 27, and the main event from March 28 to 30 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC).

Although counted as Asia’s leading art fair, Art Basel Hong Kong recently has been in the downturn, due to the pandemic and Hong Kong’s protests. After hosting 242 galleries in 2019, the fair did not take place in 2020, followed by 104 galleries in 2021, 130 in 2022, and 177 in 2023.

This year’s Art Basel Hong Kong is finally recovering to its pre-pandemic size, with 243 galleries from more than 40 countries and regions participating. 68 galleries are returning after a hiatus, and 25 new galleries are joining the fair. More than half of the participating galleries have spaces in the Asia-Pacific region. Works on view range from 20th-century masters to established and emerging contemporary artists.

As in previous years, the fair is organized into three main sections. The largest section, “Galleries,” will feature 200 galleries. “Discoveries” will show solo exhibitions by young artists, and “Insights” will present historical artists from the Asia-Pacific region. Other sectors, “Kabinett,” “Encounters,” “Film,” “Magazines” and “Conversations” are also available. During the fair week, events and programs will happen throughout the city in collaboration with various organizations and artists.
