Currently, the Busan Museum of Art is holding a solo exhibition of Takashi Murakami (b. 1962) titled “TAKASHI MURAKAMI : MurakamiZombie” is currently on view. The exhibition was scheduled to run until March 12, but due to the overwhelming support of over 100,000 visitors, the exhibition was postponed by one month to give more citizens the opportunity to see it. The exhibition will run until April 16 next week.

The exhibition is the fourth installment of ‘Lee Ufan and His Friends,’ a large-scale retrospective showcasing more than 170 works, including early works from 1998 that have never been shown to the public, as well as more recent work in a variety of genres, including painting, large-scale sculpture, installation, and video. The exhibition will also feature interactive exhibits through Murakami Augmented Reality (AR).

Takashi Murakami, a master of Japanese contemporary art, has become a world-renowned artist by incorporating the aesthetics of ‘Cuteness’, ‘Grotesqueness’, and ‘Ephemerality’ of manga in Japanese popular culture into his work, along with his ‘Superflat’ theory.

“Grotesqueness is my strength,” he says, and since the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, he has been developing a ‘Zombie Aesthetic’ that evolved from one of the aesthetics of his works, bizarreness. Through ‘Zombie Aesthetics,’ which symbolizes the anxiety of contemporary humanity, the artist presents work that break down the boundaries between East and West, high culture and subculture, tradition and modernity.

“Time States – Contradiction and Accordance,” an exhibition co-organized by the Seoul National University Museum of Art and Arumjigi, will be on view at the museum from March 24 to May 28. The exhibition will feature 75 works by masters who have popularized Korean art worldwide, including Nam June Paik, Do Ho Suh, Rhee Sung-Ja, Yun Suknam, and Haegue Yang, along with more than 100 works from the Arumjigi’s collection.

The exhibition is organized into three sections, with works that visually express a cross-section of contemporary life based on the three human elements of righteousness, consciousness, and liquor.

The first of the three sections, ‘Today, the Poetry of the Universe,’ offers a moment to pause and reflect on the interconnectedness of opposing worlds, such as yin and yang, east and west, and city and nature.

The second, ’Feeling to Last,’ shows the ways of living that have been passed down from the past to the present through the inheritance and transformation of traditional cultures and aesthetics that span the past and present.

The third, ‘Remembering or Living,’ presents works that depict life and landscapes from the Joseon Dynasty to the modern era, showing how our lives are penetrated by the emotions of the future, transcending time, space, and class.

On April 28, a month before the exhibition closes, a symposium will be held, inviting local and international experts on Korean art and culture. From traditional to contemporary Korean art, the exhibition-related symposium is open to anyone interested in the Korean Wave and its traditions.
